The piece was conceived as a battalion of fighters, battling an imaginary enemy although they can also appear to be fighting each other as in the configuration above. This is an image of people who are are in an unspecified conflict for an unspecified reason. I see this as a reflection of our times in particular but there is no time in history when conflict was not present as far as I know.
